Sleep Deprivation on Teenagers

Causes of Sleep Deprivation

With the demands of life, it’s sometimes difficult to get the right amount of sleep every night.  The causes for sleep deprivation could come from a number of sources for a teenager. The reasons why teenagers are usually not getting enough sleep include part-time jobs, homework, extracurricular activities, social demands, and early-morning classes (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2007). With all of these priorities, a teenagers’ sleep is inaccessible until the late hours of the evening. The inaccessibility of sleep due to life’s hassles could lead to a range of many minor and serious health problems. According to Teen Health (2010), the change in the circadian rhythm seems to be due to the fact that the brain hormone melatonin is produced later for teens than it is for kids and adults, which causes it to be harder for teens to fall asleep early. This means that melatonin plays a major role in assisting the difficulty of sleep. With hormones raging and the body being over worked by the demands of life, it seems difficult for teenagers to obtain the proper amount of rest.
According to the article titled, “Why aren’t teens getting enough sleep?”, the demands of life are not usually the case for the lack of sleep in teenagers (Teen Health, 2010). Studies show that during the teen’s years, the body’s circadian rhythm (an internal biological clock) is temporarily reset, telling a person to fall asleep later and wake up later (Teen Health, 2010).  This means that the internal biological clock could be one of the factors of sleep deprivation.
